Tax-saving options, compared on your numbers

See what each option could be worth after tax, and how much tax it saves each year. You set the amount, the years and the return assumptions.

Return assumptions (edit these)

These are long-term assumptions, not forecasts. Market-linked options can return more or less, and can lose value. PPF uses the currently notified rate, which the government revises quarterly.

Value after tax assumes the full amount is withdrawn at the end. "Tax saved" is the deduction benefit in the old regime, not reinvested. Options are listed in a fixed order, not ranked.

How the comparison is worked out

Each option assumes the same amount invested at the start of every year. The value after tax applies each option's tax treatment at withdrawal: PPF is tax-free; ELSS and equity funds pay 12.5% on long-term gains above ₹1.25 lakh; tax-saver FD interest is taxed every year at your slab. The tax saved is the deduction under section 123 (up to ₹1.5 lakh) or the extra NPS deduction under section 124 (up to ₹50,000), which apply only in the old regime.

Worked example

₹1.5 lakh a year for 15 years at a 30% slab saves ₹46,800 of tax each year under section 123. At 7.1%, PPF grows to about ₹40.7 lakh, tax-free. At an assumed 11%, ELSS grows to about ₹52.9 lakh after tax. Market-linked values can be higher or lower.

Common questions

Do tax-saving investments help in the new regime?

No. Deductions under section 123 (old 80C) and your own NPS contribution under section 124 are not available in the new regime. These products may still suit your goals, but they do not reduce your tax.

What is the section 123 limit?

₹1.5 lakh a year in total across PPF, ELSS, tax-saver FD, life insurance premium, EPF, tuition fees and home loan principal. Your EPF may already use part of it.

Why does NPS show a smaller tax saving?

The extra deduction for your own NPS contribution under section 124 is capped at ₹50,000. NPS can also count within the ₹1.5 lakh section 123 limit, but this tool shows the extra deduction only.
